This is the fourth year that the teachers at Grizzell Middle School have read a book aloud to all the students. This year's book was Words with Wings by Nikki Grimes. Words with Wings is a novel in verse about a young girl who daydreams and creates poems for the "words" that set her mind racing.
In 8th grade, we've had class discussions about vocabulary, similes, metaphors, alliteration, personification, imagery and plot elements. To complement our reading, students have written three of their own daydream poems with topics ranging from fall to football to One Direction to holidays to beaches to GMS.
Throughout the last two weeks, we've talked about how to format a poem and how to paint a picture with words for our readers. Students have revised and edited their poems multiple times and will share their writing tomorrow with a partner to get even more feedback.
I am so excited to see what the final drafts of the poems will look like next week. Grizzell will be decorated with daydream poems - an amazing showcase to the dedication of our students and staff to reading and writing.
