In order to get our writing year started on a personal and fun note, students created "heart maps" (thanks, Nancie Atwell). We talked about what a heart symbolizes, and students created their own heart maps with things they love. As I walked around the class, I got a glimpse into each student - the linear kiddos, whose lists were neatly organized with bullets; the random thinkers (like me), whose items were all over the place; and my artists, whose hearts were littered with pictures and colors.
Today, each student shared one item from their heart to create our class "heart".
Students chose one item they loved to write about today/tonight. I am so excited to see their writing for the first time! As per my usual self, I gave very little direction: no length requirement and no structure requirement. We'll see what everyone comes up with.
My heart is full with the start of school and with all the amazing, diverse, interesting people, places, things and ideas that my students love!
