It's been too long since my last post, so I thought I would write about a quick word study opportunity we had last week in class. We are currently studying Night by Elie Wiesel. An important concept for the students to understand is "transports" and "deportation". When we reached the point in the book when Elie and his family are ordered on to transports for their deportation to a concentration camp, we had a quick look at the word family for "port". Students volunteered the definition of "port", and away we went with thinking about other words in the word family.
It is difficult to find time in a 50 minute period to incorporate word study sometimes. I believe our talk helped students wrap their minds around how words work and what it meant to be deported during 1944.
